Aimee, welcome! Your news yesterday was incredible. Congratulations on being one of the first three young adult indie authors to be acquired by Alloy Entertainment, and launching EVERY UGLY WORD. I\u2019m so happy for you. I\u2019m sure a lot of people are interested in how it all happened.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Aimee<\/a><\/p>\n

But first, tell us about your journey before Alloy\u2026<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks for having me! I had one of those \u201calmost\u201d careers for a long time. Between 2010 and 2013, I had two different agents, both of whom ended up leaving agenting while we were on submission. [Cue facepalm]. It was a blessing that my second agent, Brittany Howard, also became the NYT and international bestselling author Cora Carmack. It was why she had to leave agenting. But it gave her a great platform to help me self-publish (which was what I decided to do since I didn\u2019t seem to have much luck with agents).<\/span><\/p>\n

Long story short: Last year, with Brittany\/Cora\u2019s support, I self-published my book Breakable<\/i>, had an only very moderately successful release. The book was ticking along by itself (slowly\u2026very slowly), and by April of this year I was in the process of trying to bring two new stories to publication \u2013 that\u2019s when everything changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did the Alloy experience happen?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

It was surreal. I literally got an email out of the blue which I almost <\/i>didn\u2019t read because I thought it was yet another scammer trying to make money out of a struggling self-pubber. But I did read it \u2013 and started crying.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"EVERY<\/a>Lanie heads up Alloy Entertainment\u2019s e-publishing program and reads self-published books to see what could be a good fit for their new Powered by Amazon imprint. She told me later that she saw Breakable<\/i> in the \u201ccustomers also bought\u201d recommendations and clicked through.<\/span><\/p>\n

She bought it, started reading, and told me she didn\u2019t even stop to go to the bathroom until she was done. She read my blog, then contacted me the next morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

We talked on the phone that first day, then I officially signed with them about 10 days later. We jumped right into editing. It was crazy. And super-cool.<\/span><\/p>\n

What's been the biggest change in transitioning from an indie to an acquired author?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably one of those things that\u2019s different for everyone. But for me, the biggest change has been positive: I\u2019m not in this alone anymore. <\/span><\/p>\n

I enjoyed the speed and control of self-publishing, and had given up on the idea of going traditional mainly because of those aspects. But I definitely felt the pressure, too. I\u2019ve always worked on the philosophy that two heads are better than one. I was blessed with great support from friends and other authors. But the reality of self-publishing is that the buck stops with the author. There isn\u2019t a lot to challenge your forward motion. And there isn\u2019t a lot of input that doesn\u2019t come from someone who\u2019s aware of your feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n

I knew my book wasn\u2019t perfect, but I also knew I\u2019d taken my project as far as I was capable of taking it without engaging a professional editor (who I couldn\u2019t afford). So I was running with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting picked up by a traditional publisher had faded from my radar. But I have to say, Alloy has been a FANTASTIC transition. I\u2019m lucky because they work on much shorter timeframes than most traditional publishers. They are focused and passionate. The people I\u2019m working with are very experienced, and their advice is always spot on. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s such a relief to me to have people to go to with questions, an editor to bounce content ideas off, and an entire team beavering away in the background, who suddenly pop up now and then to tell me what they\u2019re doing to help me and my book. It\u2019s incredible. I wouldn\u2019t go back.<\/span><\/p>\n

What's next for you?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Another book. But I\u2019m not really in a position to talk about that yet. Sorry!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advice for authors?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Never give up on your dreams. I really had. I thought my dreams weren\u2019t going to come true, so I needed a new one to aim for. Which wasn\u2019t a bad plan, it just wasn\u2019t necessary. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard <\/i>out there. It\u2019s hard to get a product together that you can be proud of. It\u2019s hard to sell enough to make the work \u201cpay\u201d. It\u2019s hard to keep asking people you know and love to support you when they\u2019re doing it for free. <\/span><\/p>\n

But, I would say, don\u2019t give up on the ultimate goal (whatever that is for you), and especially don\u2019t give up on quality. The more authors run with self-publishing, or indie-publishing, or small-press publishing, the more content is out there, the more readers have to choose from. <\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re hoping to attract a lot of readers, or a traditional editor, or whoever, quality is your best bet at actually getting \u2013 and keeping \u2013 anyone\u2019s attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll close on, what\u2019s your favorite dog breed?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

I laughed when I read this question because it just so happens that I was dog shopping. My husband surprised me over the weekend with a 10 week old Yorkshire Terrier \/ Poodle mix. His name is Smudge. I\u2019m in love! I\u2019m excited to have the little guy hang out with me while I\u2019m writing, then goes spastic with my son when he\u2019s home. He\u2019ll have it pretty good!<\/span><\/p>\n
